Can I get an exception if I don’t have out-of-network benefits?

Sometimes. You may be able to request an exception in the following circumstances:

  • Continuity of care:  if you’re mid-treatment with a provider who has left the network
  • Network inadequacy: no in-network provider in your area offers the specialty or service you need
  • State-mandated exceptions:  some states require insurers to grant exceptions in certain situations and locations.

Note: These exceptions usually require documentation and prior approval from your insurer. Contact your insurer’s member services to initiate the process.
